About ÒThe MikadoÓ

ÒThe MikadoÓ is one of the best-known and loved of Gilbert & Sullivan's collaborations. Although the opera is inspired by, and purports to portray, Japanese culture, style, and government, it actually draws on Victorian and GilbertÕs own (and wholly imagined) view of the subject!  By setting the opera in Japan, an exotic location far away from Britain, Gilbert was able to satirise British politics and institutions more freely by disguising them as Japanese.  It also reflects the general British fascination with Japanese fashion and art at the time. TheatreWorks own version of this classic piece, echoes this fascination, but in our own modern times.  Our show takes an affectionate and admiring look at the Japan of today, drawing on the fashions as well as the now familiar brands and icons seen around the world.   Featuring a mix of loveable villains, hidden identities, thwarted lovers and great hilarity in putting them all to rights, the show is also full of memorable songs and music ("Three Little Maids from School," " HereÕs a Howdy Do" and "Tit-Willow," to name a few.)  Add to that, beautiful costumes and hilarious performances, and itÕs no surprise that ÒThe MikadoÓ continues to be joyfully staged around the world year after year.
